2.AMD’s history
In 1982, AMD entered into a technology cross-licensing agreement with Intel, allowing AMD to supply second-source chips to Intel, which provided IBM with microprocessors for new consumer-oriented personal computers. The agreement ended in 1982. In 1991, Intel and AMD launched a lawsuit over AMD’s Am386 microprocessor, which Intel said was too similar to its own 386 microprocessor. In 1994, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in AMD’s favor. That same year, Compaq signed a contract with AMD to supply chips exclusively for its computers.
In 1996, AMD acquired NextGen, another microprocessor company. That helps the company stay competitive and move away from making mostly Intel-compatible chips.
AMD released its Athlon processor in 2000, the first 1 GHz (gigahertz) microprocessor on the market.
In 2003, AMD released its Opteron chip, which was designed for server use. The result is the possibility of server consolidation, the first step before virtualization in the cloud.
In 2006, AMD announced a $5.4 billion acquisition of ATI Technologies, which makes PC graphics cards and brings the company into the high-performance PC space for gaming.
In 2008, AMD began separating its manufacturing and design operations. Its manufacturing operations were spun off to GlobalFoundries, Inc. in a multi-billion dollar deal with Advanced Technology Investment Company, now known as Mubadala, an Abu Dhabi-based state holding company. This makes AMD’s manufacturing arm fabless, and the fabrication of its chips will be outsourced to third-party manufacturers.
The company struggled through the global recession in 2008 until around 2014, with several major layoffs and three different CEOs. In 2014, AMD reorganized into two business units: Computing and Graphics and Enterprise, Embedded and Semi-Custom. The Computing and Graphics segment focuses on PC processors and GPUs. Enterprise, embedded and semi-custom focus on more specialized processors such as server and embedded processors, gaming console technology and semi-custom system-on-chips (SoCs).
In February 2022, AMD acquired technology and semiconductor company Xilinx for about $50 billion.
